The Interim Rule takes effect on November 30, 2020. This new Interim Rule is part of DoD’s efforts to enhance the protection of sensitive data within the Federal supply chain. The CMMC framework adds a verification and assessment component to DoD’s cybersecurity requirements encompassed in the basic safeguarding requirements of FAR clause 52.
For contractors already required to comply with NIST SP 800-171, per DFARS 252.204-7012, DoD now is going to hold those contractors accountable, instituting an assessment and reporting system to verify compliance before new contracts can be awarded.
What Does Getting a CMMC Accreditation Involve? The DOD encourages its contractors to complete a self-assessment prior to scheduling a CMMC assessment.
The U.S. Department of Defense released the first version of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) back on January 31, 2020. Since that time, there has been a flurry of different industry experts working towards helping clients understand and prepare for getting certified under CMMC.
The Defense Department‘s new cybersecurity standard for contractors has completed the interagency review process, a DOD spokeswoman told FedScoop, and it will head into an open comment period once an interim rule is published.
